US, 1972 "The distance between reading and seeing has been an ongoing interest for me. Since 1998 I have been exploring this space through the use of letterforms, and have used the letter E as my primary starting point for the last two years. Since E is often found at the top of vision charts, I questioned what I saw as a familiar hierarchy. Was this letter more important than other letters? E is, after all, the most commonly used letter in the English language, it denotes a natural number (2.71828), and has a visual presence that interests me greatly. In my research E has become a surrogate for all letters in the alphabet. It now replaces the other letters and becomes a universal letter (or Letter), and a string of Es now becomes a generic language (or Language). This substitution denies written words their use as legible signifiers, allowing language to become a vacant parallel Language— a basis for visual manufacture.more The future of book X

Russia/US, 1967 the design machine Alexander Gelman. Named by MOMA as one of the most famous modern and contemporary artists in all media. That’s a helluva thing to say about someone not working within the traditional spheres of fine art. Gelman begins talking about Design by Subtraction, the process by which one reveals and conceals things. Think about this: a picture he shows us of a wall of an apartment which is covered in glass tiles, used to reveal the exquisite brushstrokes in the grouting beneath the tiles. If you subtract a layer – in this case the standard ceramic tiles – you reveal something else. He enjoys working “with a logo for example, and pushing it to the point where it almost disappears but is still recognisable. That is the power of the brand, and that is what Subtraction works with. Ultimately we are surrounded by an assault on our sense all day long from ever kind of media, and so subtraction, with its subliminal power of suggestion and recognition, becomes more commanding than a full on overly designed space. Inherent in this concept is the value of continuity. Gelman talks about the Absolut vodka series of ads, whereby the shape of the bottle is all that is consistent and yet it’s so instantly recognisable that everything else can be taken away if needs be. Alexander doesn’t just throw these brand names around. He has, in fact worked with all of them and many more premier brands and products. And when a designer can approach people from Chanel to Disney with the same philosophy, and create a unique design statement for each of them, well, then, there’s not much to argue with here is there? source
